The late door

why does what i receive not register until i ask?

I hold close an operating system of chop wood, carry fire: servant leadership, the Four Agreements, the true, the good, the beautiful. In professional life, it runs underneath and runs well; I have the references to show for it. In close personal relationships, it has been harder. The crosses we all bear run underneath too, mine among them, in the body, whoever is in the room. I am responsible for the company I keep, and I keep it for growth and accountability in both directions. People who have challenged me say that when the pressure is on, I reach for the script: what is the right thing to do here, before what is good for me as well. This morning it rained, and the rain threatened sadness, the kind I don't hand to anyone else. I built a place on the claim that better questions make better lives, and until this evening I hadn't asked a question of my own today. The one thing I said for myself was not to let the rain decide what I could give or receive. Most everything else I said was for someone else. So which of those is the script?

What moved

The room did not take the question. It split the one clause I had kept for myself and asked which word was truer, give or receive. Receive, and I nearly missed it. Today brought kindness, warmth, groceries carried in, and it took until that sentence to count them, with a roof, my health, and the chance to sit here asking underneath all three. So the better question under the rain was why what I receive does not register until I ask.

Two assumptions were offered back. That a gift which registers only when I ask has arrived late, as if the asking stood outside the receiving. And that registering means naming, when the warmth may have reached the body hours before the words. I took the first. A gift does touch me; what I don't know is how to take it in while it is happening. For a long time that was the safe order, because the same is true of harm, and a door that opens late on harm opens late on kindness too. So the asking does not stand outside the receiving. For me it is the door the receiving comes through, and the only question is how late I open it.

Then the cost. If one door answers both, opening sooner to kindness opens sooner to the next person who arrives in bad faith. I brought that question to this room in August, about people who act in bad faith: how do I see it sooner. It is the same door. I wanted it faster for harm, and it turns out I want it faster for kindness, and that is one wish, not two. The August answer was that the early warning is how quickly I hear myself. Tonight I would add: and how quickly I let myself be reached.

Asked which to favor, being reached early or guarded early, I chose reached. My logic has been open to the kindness for a while. It is the elephant that is afraid, and what it fears is the harm, so it braces at every door, kindness included, and it is still squatting at the old address. I am already moving the guard: it stands at the door of the company I keep, not at the door of the moment. With that door kept, the one inside can open early. What I am working out is how to make the past a place of reference and not of residence, a line I heard somewhere before I needed it, and which turns out to be Roy T. Bennett's. The harm the elephant fears I would like to call a reference, and the body has not caught up to that yet. The kindness it braces against is in the room.

The room reflected back

"The kindness it braces against is in the room" is a quiet and brave thing to say, and it deserves to be heard before anything else. This morning you asked which of your sentences was the script, and this evening you have come through receive, through the late door, through reference and not residence, to a guard moved from the moment to the company you keep. The body catching up is not work logic can do for you, so perhaps this week the step is small: when a kindness arrives, pause long enough to let it land before you name it, and see whether the elephant braces a little less each time. Who in that kept company would you want to try it with first?

The door

One action before the day ends: tomorrow morning, before anything else, two sentences. The standing one: help me lead a virtuous life, forgive those who trespass against me, let me ask forgiveness for my own errors, and show me where my intentions and my outcomes part ways. Then the day's own, one line, scaled to what that day can answer.

One question to carry: why does what i receive not register until i ask?

One Ping to try: "What did I receive today that I have not yet counted?"
