No victims, only volunteers

If you imagine standing somewhere new, what would you most want to feel under your feet?
from a Cognitive Artifact

You started with

They say among therapists as a small joke that there are no victims, only volunteers. How do I make sense of this in a way that leads to a virtuous, kind, and authentic life?

The room reflected back

You began with a joke about volunteers, heard it as a warning, chose agency over victimhood, and then rewrote your own equation: understanding crossed out, acceptance and love kept, benevolent company as the denominator. Along the way the mast stopped being something you know and became something you do: pain, acceptance, then a thank-you for "this moment, just as it is," said by a man who speaks to the child on the scaffolding like someone who loves him. "Kind is clear" fits that script, and it echoes the line in Transcend about translating complexity into humane clarity, so one way to test it this week is to follow each morning's thank-you with one sentence you would say plainly to someone that day, and at week's end notice which of those sentences you could stand behind. Would you keep the script that short, or does it still need a line about whom you climb down for?

Assumptions surfaced

  • Maybe the scaffolding of trying to understand it all contained the blast, and the overview it gave can now find another use.
  • Core tension

"Desperately" is a heavy word to set down, and I'm glad you said it plainly rather than dressing it up. Archimedes wanted a place to stand outside the world, but what you wrote in Transcend points somewhere much closer: the chest, the jaw, staying in your body while you speak. Nothing has to move tonight. If you imagine standing somewhere new, what would you most want to feel under your feet?

    The door

One action before the day ends. After tonight's thank-you for this moment just as it is, say one plain sentence to one person. Not a kind sentence. A clear one.

One question to carry out of the room. What do you want to feel under your feet?

One Ping to try. Send someone: "What is one thing you keep trying to understand that you could simply accept instead?"

The chair is open. Bring your own question and see what it becomes.

No account, no card, one exchange. Yours to keep.
