Should I quit my job, or is that the answer to a different question

You have drafted the message. Possibly more than once, possibly on a Sunday evening. You did not send it, and the not sending has become a piece of evidence about yourself that you cannot read.

The question as asked has two answers and both of them are wrong, because should I quit is a question about an action while the thing that is unresolved is a comparison. Leaving is not the opposite of staying. Leaving is one particular way of ending one particular thing, and until that thing is named the decision has nothing to close on.

So the useful move is to name what would have to change for staying to be tolerable, in detail, down to a named person or a named condition. Two things can happen. Sometimes the list turns out to be short and possible, and you find you were never deciding whether to leave, you were deciding whether to ask. And sometimes the list is plainly impossible, and you already knew that, and the decision has in fact been made for some time and has been waiting for you to say it.

The thing worth watching is the relief. If writing the impossible list makes you lighter, that is not proof that you should go. But it is information you did not have this morning, and it came from your own hand rather than from advice.
